Power BI with User Owns Data

A report under a key registered with Embed Mode User Owns Data, shown with each viewer's own Power BI access and row-level security. A viewer with a work account connects it once, from this prompt.

This is a screenshot, in the theme you are viewing the site in; we show it live in the demos we give.

How it works

  • The viewer's own access. The report is embedded as the viewer, so it shows what Power BI shows them: they need a Power BI license and access to the report, and its row-level security applies to them as it does in Power BI.
  • Connected once, kept on the server. A viewer signed in with a work account connects it to Power BI once. What that gives the portal stays on the server, encrypted; the browser only gets a short-lived access token, and signing out disconnects them. A personal Microsoft account can't connect.
  • One setting on the registration. The same component and the same registration tables, with Embed Mode set to User Owns Data. The MCP server's add_powerbi_signin_permissions gives the portal's Microsoft sign-in app registration the Power BI permissions it needs.
